What online security measures are in place?

CitiFinancial® recognizes the importance of protecting your personal information and have taken many steps to ensure the security of your application and your privacy. We utilize the latest security technology, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). We also recommend the use of a browser that supports 128-bit encryption to protect the privacy and confidentiality of your personal information. Please review our Privacy Promise for more details.

What is encryption?

Encryption technology helps provide secure transmission of information along the Internet by encoding the transmitted data using a mathematical formula to scramble the data. That means unauthorized parties can't read it, but we can by using a decoder.
Basic encryption involves the transmission of data from one party to another. The sender encodes the data by scrambling it and then sends it on. The receiver must decode the data with the correct "decoder" in order to read and use it.

How secure is encryption?

The effectiveness (or level of security) for encryption is measured in terms of how long the key is -- the longer the key, the longer it would take for someone without the correct "decoder" to break the code. This is measured in bits. For 40-bit key there are 240 possible different combinations. For 128-bit key there are 2128 possible different combinations. Today, most browsers use 128-bit encryption.
